StormFLO® Civil SN8

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does StormFLO compare to Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP)?

StormFLO is a twin-wall plastic pipe made from polyethylene (PE).  It is used for drainage purposes and can be used in many of the same applications as RCP*.  StormFLO is corrosion resistant and lightweight compared to RCP, which makes it easier to install, resulting in a faster installation time that delivers additional cost saving benefits.  StormFLO is safe and easy to handle has the benefit of not producing silica dust when cut.

The smooth internal wall of StormFLO provide improved hydraulic performance compared to equivalent-sized traditional RCP.

    * It is recommended that applications are validated by structural analysis to AS/NZS 2566.1

  • Are all recycled plastic pipes the same?

The long-term performance of plastic pipes is highly dependent on using raw materials that have the required properties and ensuring that pipes meet performance criteria. Vinidex is currently the only Australian manufacturer incorporating the UCLS test method into its in-house test regime. This ensures that PE twinwall pipes containing post-consumer recyclate have the same 100 year design life as pipe manufactured with virgin material. This means that you can trust StormFLO will perform over its 100 year design life.

StormFLO also contains up to 65% post-consumer recyclate – this can equate to up to 1650 single use plastic bottles in a length of StormFLO, making it a sustainable solution that stands the test of time.

  • What tools are able to assist in knowing if StormFLO is right for my application?

Vinidex offers range of technical expertise, supporting you from the start of your project to the finish and beyond.
Our buried pipe structural calculator is available on our website to assist in ensuring that Vinidex twin-wall pipes are suitable for your application.

  • What’s the difference between StormFLO by Vinidex and StormPRO by Vinidex?

StormFLO is made from polyethylene (PE) and contains up to 65% post-consumer recyclate.

Vinidex StormPRO pipes, made from polypropylene (PP), and can be manufactured using post-industrial recyclate. Both can be used for drainage and stormwater applications and offer a multitude of benefits compared to traditional RCP alternatives.

  • How deep can you bury StormFLO®?

StormFLO® pipes have a stiffness classification of SN8 and may be suitable for cover heights exceeding 6 metres. A full structural analysis to AS/NZS 2566.1 should be completed to confirm suitability for deeper covers, high loads, or poor soil conditions.

  • Can StormFLO be installed above-ground?

StormFLO® can be installed above ground with pipes supported at regular intervals. Please refer to the installation guide for more information about above ground pipe support.

  • Is deflection an issue for StormFLO ?

Deflection is the ability to deflect under external load is an advantage for flexible pipes.

Rigid pipes, such as RCP, need to support any external live and/or static vertical loads within the pipe itself.  Flexible pipes, such as StormFLO, have the benefit of being able to transfer external loading to the surrounding soil via a small amount of deflection.  This load transfer occurs via a small amount of pipe deflection that occurs as loading is applied and will not have an impact on performance.

StormFLO pipes installed with good compaction, in accordance with AS/NZS 2566.2, will reach a point of equilibrium after soil consolidation.  When this point of equilibrium is reached there will be no additional deflection. This usually happens within 90 days of installation.
