Project background
The Hazelwood Power Station is a decommissioned brown coal-fuelled thermal power station located in Latrobe Valley, Victoria. In November 2016, ENGIE announced that the entire Hazelwood plant would be closed by the end of March 2017.
The challenge
To provide critical stormwater controls over three levels of the Hazelwood Mine pit area, in accordance with the site’s approved rehabilitation process.
The solution
350m of DN900 StormPRO® spillways were installed to control stormwater during and after the rehabilitation period with 12 pits installed at each stage. Each section was installed in trenches over 1.5m deep, with onsite contractors choosing to bench the trench, eliminating the use of shields or shoring, and reducing several other risk factors, to help protect the workers on the ground.
StormPRO® was the product of choice for the installing contractors, electing its use over alternative materials. The ease of installation and handling was additionally beneficial to adhere to the project’s completion deadline. As the rehabilitation program continues Vinidex will work with ENGIE at Hazelwood Mine to provide environmentally conscious solutions, ensuring the end result is enjoyed by generations to come.
